What's new
Every update is part of the purchase: nothing new to buy, and the version you have keeps working.
Postfach 1.6.2
- Alerts can be Time Sensitive: an alert for a folder has a new switch, Time Sensitive Notifications, and with it on the alert's notifications are shown even while a Focus is on, if that Focus allows Time Sensitive notifications. It is off until you turn it on, alert by alert in Settings › Alerts, and notifications about new mail stay as they are
- On the Mac, ⌘F goes to the search field while no message is open; with a message open it finds in the message, as before (Search)
- Smaller improvements and fixes
Postfach 1.6.1
- Smart folders, a search you keep: a smart folder is a list in the sidebar of the messages that meet its conditions, from every account: words, the sender, the account and the folder, when a message arrived, attachments, unread, flagged. After a search, Save as Smart Folder… keeps it, and Settings › Smart Folders makes and changes them. Nothing is moved, on your device or on your mail server (Search)
- Settings › Privacy is new: it counts the trackers Postfach blocked in the mail you opened, has a switch for each known service, and takes domains of your own to block. Whether an account loads remote images is set there too, no longer in Appearance (Tracking)
- The list of known trackers can be brought up to date from a file: Update List from File… in Settings › Privacy reads one you saved, and a file only adds to what is blocked. Postfach never fetches a list itself (Tracking)
- Postfach asks before it sends a message without a subject or without text
- Search finds words in Japanese and Chinese mail, which is written without spaces
- The Statistics page of Settings is now called Storage
- Postfach in Spanish and Japanese
- Smaller improvements and fixes
Postfach 1.6.0
- Find in a message: ⌘F opens a find bar for the open message and every message of its conversation, ⌘G and ⇧⌘G step through the matches, and ⌘E looks for the text you selected; on the iPhone and the iPad it is Find in Message, in the message's menu (Search)
- A search begins in the folder on screen, Junk and the Archive included, where it began in All Mailboxes; the bar above the results widens it to Sent or to All Mailboxes (Search)
- Tracking is blocked: the tracking pixels of known services, and invisible pictures, are taken out of a message before it is shown, also when you let the message load its remote images, and the message's header says how many were blocked
- Long conversations from mailing lists read better: each reply stands under the message it answers, Next Unread in Conversation, ⌥⌘↓ on the Mac, takes you to the next unread message, and a folded message shows the beginning of what it says, not of what it quotes
- Junk rules for all your devices: Send Junk Rules by Email… in Settings › Junk Rules sends your rules and your trusted senders to your other devices, so that all of them treat the same mail the same way (Junk)
- When you save a junk rule, you choose which of the matching messages in your inbox move to Junk
- Mark as Junk can suggest a junk rule made from the message: on for new installs, and for everyone else a switch in Settings › Junk Rules
- On the Mac, a message in Junk no longer opens because you select it: Postfach shows its subject, its sender, and a Load Junk Message button, and neither loads the message nor marks it as read until you click
- All of a message's attachments at once: Save All… puts them into a folder, Save All as ZIP… into one file; on the iPhone and the iPad both share them
- On the Mac, the recipients by keyboard: in To, Cc, and Bcc the arrow keys move from address to address, the delete key removes the selected one, and Tab takes a suggested address; and a file dropped on the text of a message is attached
- A reply marks every line of the message it quotes with “>”, so an answer written between its paragraphs stands apart from the original
- Postfach in Italian
- Security and reliability fixes throughout the app
Postfach 1.5.0
- Room on a small device: Postfach can keep the text of every message and leave its attachments and pictures on your mail server. Each account has its own rule in Settings › Statistics: keep all of them, as before, those of the last months, those under a size, or none; Apply Now does the same for the mail already on the device. The text stays readable and searchable, and small pictures such as logos stay too
- Offload on an open message leaves that one message's attachments and pictures on the server. An attachment left there shows a cloud and comes back with a click or a tap, and the message is kept whole from then on
- Forward can send a message's attachments along: it asks first, with or without, and fetches those on the mail server before it does
- Make a Junk Rule… starts with the whole subject ticked and lists only the words that are rare in your mail; a switch in Settings › Junk Rules leaves the subject unticked (Junk)
- Security and reliability fixes throughout the app
Postfach 1.4.3
- Notifications about new mail no longer appear while Postfach is the app in front, and they leave Notification Center once you have read the mail, here or on another device, or moved or deleted it. The notification about many messages at once opens their inbox
- On the Mac, while no message is open, the reading pane names the account whose mail you are looking at, and in All Inboxes how many accounts it shows. Text you select in a message you are writing is easy to read again in dark mode
- Security and reliability fixes throughout the app
Postfach 1.4.2
- Rename Folder… renames a folder you made, on your mail server too, with its messages and subfolders: from its menu in the mailboxes (a right-click on the Mac, touch and hold on the iPhone and the iPad) or from the Folder menu on the Mac. A folder closed in the mailboxes stays closed when it is moved or renamed
- On the iPhone, Get New Mail sits at the foot of the mailboxes beside Settings and Contacts; its arrows turn while mail is checked, and a tap shows what is being checked and when mail was last checked. The foot no longer jumps as the time goes by
- On the Mac, a conversation of several messages is marked as read even when you open it right after another one, and it opens at the top; long HTML messages in a conversation no longer jump as you scroll, nor leave empty space under them when the window gets wider
Postfach 1.4.0
- Postfach Contacts, an address book of Postfach's own: the people you write to, and a sender you mark Not Junk once your mail server confirms the message came from them; trust a sender from a message's menu, or add an address yourself. Their mail stays out of Junk, and comes back if your server's filter put it there, and their remote images load, each a switch in the book. On the Mac in the Window menu, on the iPhone and the iPad in the mailboxes (Junk)
- Addresses in a new message are tokens: drag one from To into Cc or Bcc and back; its menu moves, edits, copies, or removes it, and a click shows its address in place of the name. Over an open message, To and Cc start with the same TO and CC capsule as the list
- Make a Junk Rule… shows what a rule matches while you tick its words; on the Mac and the iPad a panel beside the form lists the messages, each with the words of the rule it holds
- Accessibility: at the largest text sizes texts wrap where they were cut off, and the iPad shows the list beside the message; with Reduce Motion on nothing slides or springs; a search's matches are underlined and a drop target outlined; green text is darker and easier to read
- Eddie the cat lives on the iPhone too, under your accounts in the mailboxes; and in About, the real Eddie
- In a Flagged mailbox, Unflag and every other action reach the flagged messages even when a newer reply stands for the conversation. Add Account starts with IMAP, and a message you are writing on the iPhone or iPad closes only with its X, which asks before anything is lost
Postfach 1.3.2
- Dividers group your accounts in the sidebar: a plain line, or a heading such as “Work” over the accounts under it, which can hide them with their unread count beside it. Add one in Settings › Accounts or from an account's menu; a settings export takes your groups along
- Your mail takes much less space on your device: the search index no longer keeps a second copy of every message's text, and downloaded messages are no longer copied into iCloud Backup or Time Machine
- The Flagged mailbox and long lists open faster, the first download of a large mailbox no longer slows down as it grows, and new mail is checked against many junk rules in a fraction of the time
- In Junk, senders are shown by their address. Make a Junk Rule… offers the whole subject as a rule of its own, and asks before saving a rule that would also catch mail you kept
- On the Mac: the search suggestions close with Escape or Return and keep your search, ⌘A selects every message in a mailbox, Get new mail stays in sight in a narrow sidebar, Colourful Icons colour the toolbar too, and a startled cat can sit in the Dock while an alert has gone off
- Messages no longer lose their text when the server sends their headers again, a renumbered folder no longer announces old mail as new, and if Postfach cannot open its data, it offers to start over and keeps the old data aside
Postfach 1.3.1
- Remote images can be remembered for a sender: Load remote images on a message loads them in the sender's later messages too, which say so, with Stop to ask again. Only for a sender your mail server confirmed, never in Junk; Remember senders in Settings › Appearance turns it off for an account
- A help text in Settings is folded to one line, with More at its end to read the rest
- On the Mac and the iPad: the switch for Eddie the cat is in Settings › Appearance › All Accounts
- Replying to or forwarding a very long message is quick again, and messages with forwarded messages inside forwarded messages open with far less memory
- Pressing and holding a link, or force clicking it on the Mac, no longer opens a preview that loaded the page before you chose to
- New mail still arrives when your server turns Postfach away for too many connections, and many smaller fixes keep your mail and your sign-ins safe from messages and servers that misbehave
Postfach 1.3.0
- All Inboxes opens onto All Drafts, All Sent, All Flagged, All Archives, All Junk, and All Trash, each one list over that folder of every account; each row names its account, and the choice above the list narrows it to one. Mark All Messages as Read, Empty Trash, and Delete Junk Mail work on every account at once, after one question; a switch in Settings › Appearance turns the mailboxes off
- Junk rules catch the junk your server lets through: on a message in Junk, Make a Junk Rule… proposes its rarest words, rare as measured in your own mail, and shows what the rule would have caught before you save it; new mail that matches goes to Junk without a notification (Junk)
- Mail from people you have written to, from your own accounts, or marked Not Junk is never moved by a rule; a message a rule moved says which one, and Not Junk on it offers to change the rule. The rules are in Settings › Junk Rules, where a switch can offer a rule each time you mark a message as junk
- Folder alerts, from Add Alert… in a folder's menu: a notification when the folder holds more unread messages than you choose, or when more than that many arrive within the minutes you set, once or again every so many minutes while it lasts. The folder's count turns red in the sidebar, an alarm follows the account's name, and the alerts are listed in Settings › Alerts
- On the iPhone and the iPad: text selected in a message that knows no dark mode shows in dark mode too
Postfach 1.2.3
- Sync Activity says what is being downloaded: for each account a line for checking mail and a line for the download, with the folders and how far it has got
- Emptying the Trash, or moving or deleting tens of thousands of messages at once, runs in the background without holding up the app; removing a large account needs far less memory
- A copy for Sent or a draft the server would not take, when the mailbox is full, say, is listed in the Outbox with Save Again
- A move, a deletion, or a flag change made just as the connection drops is kept and sent once the connection is back
- Messages read or flagged on another device show so in every folder, also on servers that keep no record of changes for some folders
Postfach 1.2.2
- All Inboxes names the account each message came to on a line of its own above the sender, with the date at its end
- Each account chooses how it is named there, by name, by address, or both, in Settings › Appearance › Names
- Senders are shown by each account's own choice of name or address, in its notifications too; the switch over all accounts is gone
- A section's help text in Settings is folded to two lines, with More to read the rest, and Accounts comes first in Settings
- On an account's page, Save waits until something has changed, and the page says so while it holds unsaved changes
Postfach 1.2.1
- An account that cannot sync is marked beside its name in the sidebar and in Settings › Accounts, with the reason, Try Again, Account Settings, and Show in Log
- An error at the foot of the window or the screen opens to its whole text, and Show in Log opens the log on that account's errors
- Insert Template lists your template folders straight away when every template is in a folder
- The Junk rules for emoji and alphabets never move mail sent from one of your own accounts, so templates you send from one device to another arrive in the inbox (Junk)
- On the iPhone and the iPad: swiping a message in Junk shows Not Junk in green
Postfach 1.2.0
- Folders you keep inside the Inbox, the Archive, or another system folder show under it in the sidebar, where they can be opened, moved, and deleted; New Folder and Move to offer the Inbox and your own folders only
- Remote images are each account's choice, when you ask or always, and in Junk they always wait until you ask (Junk)
- When Microsoft doesn't yet let an Outlook.com or Hotmail account send from mail apps, Postfach says so, keeps the message in the Outbox, and links to what to do (Outlook.com and Hotmail)
- On the Mac: Include Archive in a search no longer breaks its label over several lines when the message list is narrow
- The alphabets in Settings › Junk in alphabetical order
Postfach 1.1.1
- The Archive listed by year, or by year and month, each with its message count (Archive)
- A search across all mailboxes leaves the Archive out unless you include it, and marks the words you searched for
- Sent and Drafts show who each message went to
- An Appearance pane: how each account and the people in its mail are shown in the sidebar, the list, and the open message, by name, by address, or both, and whether it loads remote images when you ask or always
- A Junk pane with the emoji rule and a new rule for subjects in alphabets you tick, and Trash and Junk emptied in one go (Junk)
- Your settings, accounts, and templates exported to one file and imported on another device, without passwords
- On the Mac: a message in its own window, printing, attachments by pasting or dropping, and Postfach as the default mail app (On the Mac)
- Fixes from two security reviews, and large moves that work on Zimbra servers
